Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS)

Description

The Institute of Communications and Computer Systems (ICCS) is the largest academic research institute in Greece, founded in 1989 as the research branch of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). With over 800 researchers and participation in more than 4000 national and European R&D projects, ICCS is a leading player in areas such as Hardware and Software Technology, Computer Networks, Digital Communications, Energy Technologies, Biomedical Systems, and Photonics. Its research impacts the European Research Area (ERA) and contributes to global scientific advancement. The I-SENSE Group, one of ICCS’s 34 research units, focuses on Intelligent Transportation Systems, Virtual Environments, Assistive Technologies, and Smart Integrated Systems. Established in 2002, I-SENSE has coordinated over 150 projects, including major EU initiatives like EVENTS, PODIUM, DELPHI, and 5G-IANA, collaborating with industry leaders to advance technological innovation in various fields.

Role and Key Contribution to the Project

ICCS is involved in almost all SYNERGIES work packages and is leading WP3 (data analysis, collection, and generation). ICCS will lead efforts to analyze and generate data from various sources, including accident databases, sensor data, simulations, vehicles, highway units, and drones. By identifying gaps in existing data, ICCS will create new data and develop a wide range of scenarios using advanced simulation tools like CARLA, Matlab RoadRunner, Scenic, and ns3. These scenarios will be used to evaluate a ROS-based AD stack developed by the team. Additionally, ICCS will help develop metrics to assess the functionality and interpoperability of scenario databases in the project.
